Secured by Design in the community is achieved by
- Applying design against crime principles to the built environment
- Addressing crime through technology, design and planning
- Identifying a range of technologies, meeting tests and evaluations that indicate resistance to criminal attack
Independent research shows that housing estates that comply with Secured by Design experience less burglary, car crime and violent crime than non compliant estates. Figures show that Secured by Design can reduce burglary and car crime by 50% and criminal damage by 25%.
The Home Office New Crime Strategy published in July 2007 to address crime and crime prevention refers to Secured by Design as promoting good practice in using the planning system to ensure that designers and builders consider crime prevention measures during the design stage of their proposals.
Secured by Design has been particularly successful within the public sector, encouraging local authorities, housing associations and governing bodies to embrace the scheme and specify SBD compliance as a requirement in relevant tenders.
